Ethiopian leaders pay tribute to Ahmed Nasser, Chief of Benshangul-Gumuz

Addis Ababa, May 21, 2016 (GSN) - The body of the late Ahmed Nasser, Chief of Benshangul-Gumuz State, received a state farewell at Bole International Airport yesterday before it was flown to Assosa to be laid to rest. Ahmed, 51, passed away Wednesday, and his body arrived at the airport from India where he was being treated for the past two weeks.

FDRE President Dr. Mulatu Teshome and Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn, along with other State Chiefs, ministers, and other high-ranking government officials, bade farewell to the State Chief. Draped in the national flag, the casket holding the late State Chief was accompanied by a procession of military bands.
Born in Fentalle Woreda, Oromia, the late Ahmed served as the President of Benshangul Gumuz State and Deputy Chairman of Benshangul Gumuz People’s Democratic Party (BGPDP) since 2009, and as State Minister of former Ministry of Agriculture prior to that.

Ahmed received his first degree from Haromaya University in agricultural engineering, and his second degree from Hohai University of China in Water Engineering.
His burial ceremony took place yesterday afternoon in the presence of family members, relatives, colleagues, State elders and religious fathers, after a memorial service was held in his name at Assosa Stadium. Speaker of the House of People's Representatives Abadula Gemeda, Speaker of the House of Federation Yalew Abate and Minister of Government Communication Affairs Office Getachew Reda, among other officials, attended the funeral.
