Addis Ababa June 22, 2018 (GSN)-The Chairperson IGAD, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, has called on the warring parties of South Sudan for urgent implementation of the agreements to save the lives of South Sudanese people.
Addressing the opening of the 32nd session of IGAD Heads of State and Government today in Addis Ababa, Abiy said the suffering of the people of South Sudan need to come to an end quickly.
“To achieve this goal, we cannot work like business as usual. Each second and each minute that passes with business, as usual, is miss opportunity to save the lives,” he underlined.
Stressing the significance of urgent action, Abiy noted that Ethiopia is fully committed to doing everything to bring to end to one of the deadliest conflicts in Africa.
According to him, “Now is the time, for the promise is over and time is not in our side.”
“There is no shortage of ideas on how to resolve this tragic of a humanitarian crisis, the challenge is unwilling and uncommitted”, he pointed out.
He stressed that the South Sudanese authorities and different parties are unwilling and unable to see the suffering of their people.
“We need to put them notice that we are ready to act. We have the moral as well as the legal responsibility to take action,” he affirmed.
The meeting was held to discuss the revitalization proposal which was proposed by the IGAD Council of Ministers.
President Salva Kiir Mayardit and his opponent Rick Machar attended the meeting alongside with leaders of Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, Somalia, and Djibouti. (ENA)
