April 11, 2025(GSN) - Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed has appointed Getachew Reda as his advisor for East African Affairs, with a ministerial rank, effective April 11, 2025.
The move represents a significant political development, as it came a few days after he was terminated as president of the Tigray Region Interim Administration due to escalating tension in the region.
As the President of the Tigray Interim Administration, he played a key role in overseeing post-conflict stabilization efforts in the northern region of Ethiopia following the 2022 Pretoria peace agreement. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed openly hailed what Getachew has been doing in the Tigray region in the past two years.
A former spokesperson for the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), Getachew Reda, has also served as the Minister of Government Communications Affairs during Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn’s administration.
There have been speculations that PM Abiy Ahmed would consider Getachew Reda for a certain role in his government.
In related developments, Prime Minister Abiy also appointed Ambassador Hadera Abera as the State Minister of Foreign Affairs for Political and Economic Affairs, and Ambassador Berhanu Tsegaye as the State Minister of Foreign Affairs for Resource Management and Services.
The newly appointed officials were officially welcomed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Addis Ababa, where they met with ministry leadership and staff during a formal reception.
